Challenge

The main challenge was adapting an intuitive swiping system — familiar from dating apps — to a tabletop games context, while making it genuinely social rather than just transactional matching. This meant rethinking what "matching" means when the goal isn't a one-on-one connection but building game groups and communities.

The goal was also to make the app feel rewarding to use, not just functional. This meant designing a progression system, from Novice to Initié to Master, with a badge system that felt genuinely appealing rather than gimmicky, giving users a reason to keep coming back.

Another important challenge was the logistics and trust layer beneath the social experience. Users needed to locate sessions happening in real time, apply and join them smoothly, and feel confident that the experience was safe and secure, both for people hosting sessions and those joining them.

Approach

I started by researching similar apps and platforms offering the same kind of service, building a system to separate what mattered most, what was interesting but secondary, and what could be set aside. This included gathering reviews to understand what existing apps were praised for and where they fell short, consolidated into a benchmark board that guided the rest of the process.

From there, I built personas to structure the overall user path, mapping their interests, objectives, and personality traits to make sure the app's direction stayed grounded in real user needs.

I explored the visual direction through moodboarding, developing three distinct style axes to get a broad view of possible directions, then choosing the one that not only looked strongest but also responded best to the project's criteria.

Before moving into UI, I built paper wireframes and tested them with users to check whether the flow and sketched interface were easy to understand and navigate, asking and answering questions along the way to refine it.

Outcome

I built out the app's components and developed its full visual identity, from logo to color palette to UI elements, which became the foundation for the final app.

Board game and tabletop RPG enthusiasts often struggle to find other players who share their interests or to discover new games, which limits their opportunities to connect. Meepl addresses this directly with an intuitive swiping system that makes it easy to connect with others: users can find new players with shared interests, create game sessions, and join nearby games, all while encouraging real encounters and a shared love of play.

The result is an app that turns a common frustration. Isolated hobbyists with no easy way to find their people. Into a straightforward, engaging path to real connection, built around the specific culture and rhythm of tabletop gaming rather than borrowed dating-app logic.
